Bike for Cambodia Results

On Saturday, October 16, 2010 a group of riders gathered to ride the Freeport-Butler Rails to Trail. We were blessed with a picture perfect fall day.

But our ride that day had a greater purpose than just the enjoyment of fellowship within our group, the lovely scenery and some exercise - we were going to help provide bicycles for children in Cambodia.

A big thank you goes out to Christie Pink who did so much to organize the event and handle registration. Because of the generosity of the riders and others who contributed to this event a total of forty six children in Cambodia will now have the blessing of a bicycle. They can go to school without being tired from a 1.5-5 mile trek. They can go to the market and have even more opportunity. A total of $1,695 was donated for the orphaned children at nine New Hope Children’s Homes. Read more about it at SEAPC web site.

Below is a picture of the Pedal the Way group co-leader Scott and his wife Laurel and the Cambodian children they were raising money for during their ride.

Based on the turn out and the success of this event, we are making Bike for Cambodia an annual event.

Thank you to all who made this event a success!

Bike for Cambodia - Saturday, October 16th

Pedal The Way small group has partnered with SEAPC for Bike for Cambodia on Saturday, October 16th. As a small group, we asked that each rider would track their trips and mileage and pledge an amount per mile or per trip and designate that money towards the end of the season as a contribution to a worth cause. Bike for Cambodia is a great opportunity to express our small groups core value of Contribute. It only takes $55 to buy a bicycle for a deserving child in Cambodia. Scott and I hope that every member of Pedal The Way will join with us in supporting Bike for Cambodia.

You can register at Bike for Cambodia and make your donation during registration or you can bring your check to the event. A release of liability form will be required of each person riding on Saturday. If you cannot ride but would like to make a donation you can also do that as well. Registration starts at 11 AM and we will officially begin riding at noon. As always you are free to set your own pace and distance.

Great Allegheny Trail ride Saturday, October 9th

We will meet at the train station in Meyersdale, PA (use 527 Main St. for on line mapping or your GPS navigation) at 10 AM on Saturday, October 9th and ride down to Cumberland, MD. Here is a link to the Meyersdale, PA trail parking. Below are the directions to the trail parking from the Great Allegheny Passage web site. From Pittsburgh it will take approximately 2 hours so please plan your trip so you can arrive in plenty of time to make the 10 AM start.

This ride is a point to point from Meyersdale, PA to Cumberland, MD. Once we get to Cumberland, MD we typically eat lunch and/or view the sites before loading up the big van with riders and putting the bikes on the truck and trailer and then we head back to Meyersdale, PA. The distance between Meyersdale and Cumberland is 32 miles with most of it down hill. In fact the elevation change from the Eastern Continental Divide to Cumberland is 1787 feet. We have enough room for all the riders (and the bikes) who have notified us that they are riding. If you are not sure you have reserved your spot please reply to this email or call one of us immediately.

The weather for Saturday looks great and the Fall foliage should be nice. You might want to bring your camera for this ride! The temperatures will be a bit chilly when we start the ride plus we do go through some tunnels so please make sure you wear layers . Also bring plenty of water and any snacks you may want to eat along the trail.

I encourage you read about the Great Allegheny Passage to get more information on the ride areas.

West Penn Trail Ride Sunday, October 3rd

On Sunday, October 3rd we will meet at the parking area near the trail in Saltsburg, PA and begin our ride at 2:00 PM. Here is the link to the parking area .

To get there from Pittsburgh you can take 376 east to US 22 and then to PA 286 to Saltsburg, PA. Turn left over the Conemaugh river and then right on Salt Rd. Continue down Salt Rd. until you get near the river and see a playground. Meet in the parking area in the playground. Saltsburgh is approximately 31 miles from the east end of Pittsburgh (Regent Square) so allow about an hour to get there.

We will ride for approximately one to two hours and then back for a total trip time between two and four hours. This trail has some disconnected and challenging sections so we may adjust the ride time as needed. The weather looks to be cool on Sunday so I would suggest you wear some light layers. Make sure you have water and any snack you might want to bring along for the ride as well as your helmet.
